World Rugby Sevens
February 8 & 9, 2002
The Cake Tin, Wellington

Match report

Another classic Bottom Bus rugby trip. The Cake Tin was booked and we had one hundred tickets! Click on the images below to blow up.

The much improving South African team won the New Zealand leg of the World Sevens in Wellington beating Western Samoa in the final.

The WestpacTrust Stadium hosted a sellout crowd over two days of 35,000 including 75 Elvises (Elvi?), 25 CHIPS, 125 Nuns, those with watermelon helmets, the Blue Heads... the list goes on.

Bottom Bus turned it on for the event organising 100 tickets and a party-time event. The t-shirts looked good, the beer was cold and we even got some sunshine! Wellington continues to grow it's reputation with this event and being the party capital of New Zealand.

Yeah we love that. Proud welsh supporters.

Favourites, the New Zealand All Blacks, were bundled out in the semifinals by South Africa as this event continues to be the bogie one with NZ - never having won it in three attempts. Other highlights include England beating Fiji in the quarters and Wales beating Australia late on the last day much to the delight of the crowd.

The crowd was continually entertained with music, cheergirls and just the general jovialness of the atmosphere. Colour, sun, music, good rugby, a few lion reds and 35,000 people - the formula for a great couple of days.

See you in 2003. Party on dudes.
