Highlanders vs The Sharks
March 2, 2002
The House of Pain, Dunedin

Sharks Attacked!

The Highlanders returned to their winning ways back at their hallowed home ground of Carisbrook in Dunedin giving the Sharks of South Africa a monumental thrashing 45-5.

After narrowly losing the first game of the Super 12 to arch-rivals Canterbury last week, the Highlanders continued their winning way at the House of Pain in front of a passionate crowd of Scarfies (students) and Bottom Bus supporters!

The Gardies (student pub) was the meeting place as usual for the Bottom Bus team. You could tell in was early in the academic year with the Scarfies concentrating more on leisure activities than their studies. After a few Speights, a feed and the Cadbury Chocolate 'scramble' it was off to the ground.

Over 70 backpackers joined in on the fun, standing out in their kiwi-green t-shirts, giving their helping hand to support their newly adopted team. With blue and yellow face-paint for Africa and the words to a few lines of the Highlanders song they sang and danced their way through the two halves of pulsating rugby.

Up on 12-5 at halftime thanks to 4 penalties to Tony Brown, the southern men really turned it up in the second half scoring some massive tries in the process. Front rower - Joe 'the Dumpster' McDonnell was a standout and his efforts were rewarded with the big prop being on the end of a Jeff Wilson pass to score himself. Goldie (Wilson) also scored and is getting back to his best after being dropped from the All Blacks last year.

It was a team effort though with all players contributing and putting the foot on the throat as the South Africans tired towards the end of the game. Another player who continued to impress though was livewire flanker Sam Harding who made some scything runs and gave a 80 minute effort.

Try time. Otago does a shark attack.

After the victory the Bottom Bus team assembled at the '& Bar' for a bit more fun and a few pics. The '& Bar' is now the 'corporate box' for students having once being a principal part of a famous Speights TV advertisement. Speights is the legendary southern beer which quite a few of us were enjoying during the game .... (and before and after...)

Prizes during the day went to Dirk and Gavin for having the Sharks hooker (name not important) as the first try scorer and picking up a t-shirt and pick-the-score winner was Annie Stevenson who won a $30 bar tab from the Gardies. Anke won the Albatross Soar up Baldwin Street (the world's steepest) and she scored a Bungy Jump courtesy of the great crew at AJ Hackett. Anke booked her Rugby Trip from Germany some months ago as a present for her boyfriend Thomas. Good on ya mate.

Ben from Canada won the facepaint prize and a further AJ Hackett jump for his liberal splashing of blue and gold paint over his face and body!

Next Carisbrook game is March 8 v the Cats and the following home game is March 30 (Easter Saturday) vs the Chiefs in Invercargill. This is going to be the 'Kiwi Day Out' with Races in Riverton and a visit to Bluff also included in the itinerary.

Gonna be huge.
