National Nude Day - July 27th, 2002Brain child of former All Black and TV presenter Marc Ellis, National Nude Day (this year also known as International Nude Day) is a celebration of the skin with much fun attached. The concept has been grabbed hold of by particularly Dunedin students where getting nude is nothing new. Dunedin is a legend University City in the south of New Zealand where the madder the better is the common motto for most Scarfies. (students) The Gardies Tavern in North Dunedin is a legendary 'Scarfie' watering hole which launched in to the event last year with full gusto and had hundreds of willing participants and amused onlookers. |
| Year 2002 NND will be on July 27th and The Gardies is putting things in place to ensure that it will be even bigger this time. (don't they all say that?) With local backpacker bus company Bottom Bus getting in behind the event also, alot is on offer for all and sundry this year. Nude basketball, runs up Baldwin Street (the world's steepest) and nude sightseeing are all on the cards. 2002 is special, not only because it has gone International, but also because it is on the same day as the General Election in NZ. So this year we will be having some special prizes for those who embrace the spirit of both Events and impress us with their ingenuity and general nudeness. Bottom Bus will be offering a special trip for international backpackers to the event so they can get closer to what makes (Dunedin) students tick. Hmmm. The idea is not to shock or be intrusive on anyone's sensitivities but to get naked and have a ton of fun in an unabashed celebration of skin. Onlookers welcomed. (philosophy being a clothed person is potentially a naked person) The team on the Lion Red Sports Cafe (http://www.sportscafe.co.nz) each Wednesday night at 8.30pm, on their hour long show on SKY1, are building a nice prize pool also. This includes a Bottom Bus trip to the rugby in Dunedin and a $100 bar tab at the Gardies. Nice work. AJ Hackett have got a great number in the pot too and $1000's of other prices too. All in the spirit of getting naked and making an arse of yourself. Us at Bottom Bus love that. Pete, the Gardies publican, said there were 4 completely starkers patrons at 1pm and at the height 60 fully naked gentlemen getting right in to the spirit of the day. Basically huge. Amazing what $4 jugs will do. The 2002 New Zealand Backpacker Festival (link) saw some good nude stuff with the first ever Nude Touch Rugby International between the Irish and New Zealand. Held at St Kilda beach in freezing conditions as part of the unofficial curtain-raiser to the clothed test match at Carisbrook later that day. The NZ team was fully naked yet the Irish team was Irish naked - clothed! NZ won 2-1 although the Irish did complain that the second half was a lot shorter. Yeah right! Check out the photos on our fab photo gallery ( page 5,6 & 7 for the nude rugby shots ). Press Release - the aftermath of 2000 The event was one of many on around the country in this unique celebration of skin. In Dunedin, New Zealand's most southern city, the local students know affectionately as 'Scarfies' especially take to the day which was initiated by former Scarfie and All Black Marc Ellis. Southern Backpacker Transport operator, Bottom Bus was keen to 'get in behind' the day and sponsored the event - a naked run up and down Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street. It was a keenly contested race won by Sydney backpacker Warren. For his efforts Warren won a AJ Hackett Bungy Jump. "It is a lot steeper than it looks" puffed Warren after the run, "but in your birthday suit there is less wind resistance and you didn't want to be out there any longer than you have to be". When asked if the thought of winning the Bungy Jump was like a carrot dangling in front of him, Warren replied "there was only one thing dangling out there and it wasn't a carrot!" The contestants, a mixture of Scarfies and backpackers, returned to the local student pub "the Gardies" where they were to relieve any muscle soreness in the spa pool and maybe have a go in the naked ski jump competition - but that's another story. Naked Run organiser and Bottom Bus manager Ralph Davies, is already looking forward to next years celebrations and plans to have a mix of wacky events for participants to contemplate - "all in the name of goon fun", he insists.
